    Niger Delta Weekly Conflict Update: October 15-21, 2023

    This weekly update spotlights organized criminality in the Niger Delta with a focus on rising criminal violence and targeted killings in Delta State. According to data (see map above), criminal violence and targeted killing caused over 250 fatalities in Delta State between January 2021 and August 2023. In August 2023, for instance, gunmen reportedly attacked a divisional police station, killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and injured another in Isiokolo community, Ethiope East LGA. In October, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen allegedly killed three residents including a local vigilante in Ubulu-Uku community, Aniocha South LGA. Separately, suspected kidnappers reportedly killed a man and abducted the wife of a community leader in Owevwe community, Ughelli North LGA. Also, in October, armed kidnappers allegedly abducted a cleric, his wife and children along the East-West Road in Evwreni community, Ughelli North LGA. More recently, on October 15, 2023, a 45-year -old police inspector was allegedly attacked and killed by a group of commercial motorcyclists in Ogwashi-Uku community, Aniocha South LGA.
